The problem is, you have lost your heart. An entire world has been created where people are heart-less. What is happened to the heart? It is now despised, ridiculed, ignored, and suppressed. Rational thinking and logic –the province of the mind— are supposed to prevail, but what have they brought us? Only war, the rape of the planet, hatred, supposed self-interest. Examine that self-interest and see how logical it is…
People become greedy and self-centered. They also become fearful and paranoid. They consume, try to live up to the standards of others, hate, and even kill in the name of self-interest. Yet what is the outcome? Rampant poverty, anorexia, a host of mental illnesses, a planet that can no longer support healthy life, misery, broken relationships, and inability to truly enjoy life— the list goes on and on. How is this self-interest?
The brain is a computer, a gadget that is handy to be sure, but do we want it running our lives?
Now, there is the heart. Scientists will tell you that the physical heart is more than we ever thought it was. it has neurons, it truly does react to emotions, it is wise. Our overly-competitive culture denigrates the need for emotion, intuition, decisions based on caring for others. Yet, decisions based on the heart are what we need to make life now, and in the future, a livable place. The heart is the seed of life, of magic, of soul, of love— use whatever word makes you happy or connects with you, but it’s all the same in the end. The heart speaks not in words, but in sensations, in symbols, in urges, in meaning so deep it cannot interpreted in human language. The heart is your connection to the all-one, the universe, the divine, the truth, reality.
The heart is not in the game. The head is, but the heart knows better.
Listen for a moment. Listen carefully to your heart. Feeling into it. Feel into the energy in the center of your chest. Start with your physical heart beating. Pay close attention. Feel it, hear it dive into it. Then go deeper. It sings to you, it has a fragrance, it has a feeling, it has a sound. You won’t hear words most likely, you will only hear you. At first when you pay attention to your heart, you may cry, or laugh, or both. This may return when you are quiet again later. Let it happen. Let your heart speak to you of all of its secrets, of everything you have hidden there, of its treasure.
When the heart speaks, start paying attention. it may urge you to take an umbrella on a day it will rain. It may cause you to go back for something and save you from an accident. It may have you take a different route so you can see a sight of extraordinary beauty that changes your whole feeling for the day. It may urge you to hug a friend who was about to give up. It may whisper to stop seeing a friend who drains your energy. It may shout for you to go on a vacation or go to a spa or to take some action that will be to take care of you. It may nudge you to pet your cat, walk your dog, water your plant, or stop what you are doing and pay attention to your child.
The heart is your internal GPS system. It always knows best. You must learn to hear it, practice feeling it, treasure it, and do what it says.
