There is no “Out There”

by Dalva

There is no out there. There is only in here.

Don’t believe me?

Physics has shown us that just our act of giving attention to something profoundly changes it. Psychology has shown us that people don’t see what they don’t expect to see, and vice versa. Studies have even shown that depressed people are less likely to hear positive words. Many  years of court testimony show us that no two people remember any event in exactly the same way.

It is all inside— in you.

You look at people and don’t see them or hear them. You see your conception of them—a very different thing. How you treat them and judge them says more about you than it does about them. The same is also true of how others view or treat you—it isn’t about you at all. It’s about them.

Everything happens in here.

Because it is all in here instead of out there, we have what eastern religions call “karma.” This is the idea that every action must be paid for in some way. This is not a matter of retribution, it is a simple fact. Because there is no one out there but you— your projections, your conceptions, your experiences –you can’t help but benefit or pay for all you do. It’s simple.

This is what Jesus actually meant when he said. “whatever you have done to the least of these, you have done to me.” It didn’t mean him personally, Jesus, the man, so much as you and all that is. You do it all to yourself. You can’t rip others off without ripping yourself off. You can’t lie to others without lying to yourself. You can’t oppress others without oppressing yourself. Also, you can’t bless others without blessing yourself. It’s impossible. Because it is all you, in the end.

Rules and morality become unnecessary for the one who realizes this. Every choice becomes easy once you understand you are doing everything to yourself. Or, as Jesus said: love God, love your neighbor as yourself, all the law is this.

No person or circumstance is ever your problem— it’s all in here.

Once you accept the understanding that you are not experiencing the world, you are creating it, you have some choices to make. You can forget that you know this and keep on playing the game. You can panic at that level of responsibility. Or, you can use it to your advantage by staying aware of your creation. What are you creating today?
